BEWARE – Here is an eye-opener from a friend who had a terrible experience with Circle of Animal Lovers in New Delhi. We had been hearing a number of morbid stories about this place in the past, and a friend actually put it together in email to warn everyone.

“I just wanted to share this experience with you all. A few of my colleagues and I are crazy about animals and we take care of the dogs outside our office. We’d been thinking of getting them spayed and neutered for months and we finally called Circle of Animal lovers and sent four dogs to begin with, 3 males and 1 female, paying 300/- per dog.
We went to see them after 10 days since they hadn’t yet sent them back (they’d told us they’d be back in 7-10 days). It broke my heart to see them when we saw them. They’d lost weight, their stomachs had gone in completely, and they looked miserable. One’s stitches were open! We were told about that in the morning. By afternoon, when we went there, something should have been done about it. The place itself was disgusting, a drain ran through the place, it was just covered with an iron sheet.

They sent one back two weeks ago and another last week who is looking terribly weak. According to their website, they feed the dogs three times a day…
I doubt they are even fed once properly. They also took 200/- when we signed the release form. We certainly do not mind paying the money but give us our dogs back in a good condition. One more is coming back today, the one whose stitches opened. I only hope, they overcome this traumatic experience. We feel responsible and blame ourselves for not checking the place out properly but I hope this post will cause other animal lovers to think twice before sending either house pets or ’stray’ pets there. I apologize if this post seems all over the place, I’ve just been very upset by this episode.”

Smita’s comments – We have henceforth contacted Mrs. Irani Mukherjee, who is the person behind Circle of Animal Lovers, and haven’t received any serious explanations. A number of animal lovers in Delhi region are getting together to discuss on this and think of possible solutions. Any helpful suggestions you might have are welcome.

Here is some other person’s bad experience at CAL:
I wish to draw public attention to cruel treatment meted out to animals by a Delhi-based NGO, Circle Of Animal Lovers, receiving grants from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Animal Welfare Board of India.

Being an animal lover, I feed several street dogs in my neighbourhood. However, as the bitches often have several litters, I decided to get them sterilised. On April 11 I called the Circle of Animal Lovers located at E-67, D.D.A. Flats, Saket, New Delhi-110017, with a request to sterilise the stray dogs in my area. I was asked to give a donation of Rs.500. I agreed, and two of the dogs were taken away by them in their vehicle at 10-30 that night.

However, on April 28 they released only one of the dogs back to the area, saying that the second dog was still undergoing operation.

Despite my repeated calls to them over the next few days, the organisation was unable to tell me why the operation was taking so long.

On May 7, they finally said that they had operated upon my second dog, but for its release they demanded a payment of Rs. 600 more, which I did. Without giving me an opportunity to see and identify the dog, they made me sign a receipt saying that the dog had been operated upon successfully and was being returned. However, I was shocked to find that they had brought a different dog coloured with gentian violet and insisted that this was the same dog.

This was not true. Also, the substitute dog that was released was badly bitten and driven away by other dogs of my area. Dogs by nature are very territorial and alien dogs are never accepted.

I do not know what happened to my dog. Did it die during the operation due to some negligence or was it mistakenly released in some other area? Despite several visits to the NGO’s office, no information has been provided about the whereabouts of my dog.

I request the authorities concerned, including the funding agencies and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), to investigate and help in recovering the missing dog.

    Ajay Thomas,

    1-A D.D.A. Flats,

    Friends Colony East,

    New Delhi — 110 065.

I am really sorry for the creatures and feel ashamed on the photographer who took the pictures while people were brutally killing these animals. You say that the photographer is from the organisation who works for animals !!! really shocking
